About the project

Pursuant to a Decree of the Prime Minister of Georgia, the “My First Sapling” Programme is being implemented nationwide. Under the Programme “My First Sapling” more than 41,000 first-grade pupils across Tbilisi and Georgia (10 regions) will plant their own saplings at designated locations. This nationwide initiative will be launched on 22 October, in observance of International Tree Planting Day, and will continue for one month. Planting activities will be organised according to a designated schedule, taking into account the climatic conditions of each region and municipality. Beyond tree planting the programme also includes an accompanying information and environmental education campaign. A range of educational and awareness-raising activities has been planned for children, supported by a specially prepared educational video and booklet. Each child will also have the opportunity to complete a personal Sapling Passport - a keepsake commemorating this meaningful experience and encouraging a sense of care and responsibility for the environment from an early age.

Seedlings in Tbilisi and 10 regions

“My First Sapling” - The Programme is being implemented pursuant to the Decree of the Prime Minister of Georgia dated 31 August 2026.

Through the active engagement of young people, the Programme aims to contribute to:

a) Supporting the restoration of forests and the expansion of green spaces;

b) Biodiversity conservation;

c) Increasing public participation in efforts to mitigate the adverse impacts of climate change and promoting the adoption of sustainable development principles;

d) Integrating the Programme’s core objectives into Georgia’s long-term state policies on environmental protection, climate change and forest restoration.

Why we need more green space

Across Georgia, many populated areas face a shortage of green spaces and a decline in biodiversity. The lack of green areas close to where people live can negatively affect the environment, including air quality, the local microclimate and the population’s quality of life.

Under the Programme, saplings will be planted in populated areas across the country, including around schools, in residential neighbourhoods and in public spaces. These efforts will contribute to expanding green cover, supporting biodiversity conservation and improving the quality of the local environment.

Involving first-graders

A key component of the Programme is the involvement of first-grade pupils in this large-scale environmental initiative.
By taking part in planting saplings, children will not only contribute to improving the environment but also help lay the foundation for a culture of environmental care from an early age. This approach aims to foster environmental responsibility as a lasting societal value.

What we achieve together

  • Environmental Responsibility from an Early Age - Each participating child plants their own sapling and observes its growth.

  • Sustainable Greening Through Partnership - Promotes the adoption of sustainable greening practices through collaborative efforts.

  • Biodiversity Conservation - Saplings are planted around schools, in residential neighbourhoods and in public spaces, contributing to increased green cover.

  • Improved Air Quality - More green spaces help reduce airborne dust and particulate matter and improve the local microclimate.

A platform for other greening campaigns

The website is launching with the “My First Sapling” Programme, but the platform has been designed to allow anyone to register information about the sapling they have planted in the future.
